What is an SSRI ?
Serotonin is a brain chemical which is also called as neurotransmitter. These neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) help in transmitting information from one neuron to other neuron. By any reason if these neurotransmitters doesn’t function well, that results in mood disorders.
So these SSRIs block the reabsorption (reuptake) of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain, so that messages should be passed effectively.
Primarily Sertraline is used in major depressive disorders especially in adults for OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).
It was in 2011 when Sertraline became the 2nd most recommended antidepressant drug in US retail market. Sertraline also displayed good results in treating panic attacks as well.
While treating OCD, Sertraline ranked as an effective treatment only after CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy).

Sertraline side effects:
Using Sertraline for prolonged periods has showed some side effects. Among these , most prominent is weight gain.
When compared with various other SSRIs, Sertraline is likely associated with higher chances of diarrhoea and psychiatric side effects. After 2 weeks of treatment on some healthy volunteers, this drug enhanced verbal fluency slightly but didn’t affect ability to learn words, vigilance, short-term memory, memory span, psychomotor condition, choice reaction time, and flicker fusion time.
Sertraline withdrawal symptoms:
All SSRIs, including Sertraline, has the tendency to produce withdrawal symptoms, once you stop taking the medicines abruptly. Hence you should consult your therapist before stopping your medication.
Sertraline has successfully been used for social anxiety disorder treatment. It was seen that higher dosage range was required for sufficient quicker response. Moreover, response was more among individuals with later onset of disorder. Along with psychological components of the social phobia like avoidance and fear, Sertraline also helps in ameliorating few physiological components like palpitations and blushing but not trembling and sweating.
Sertraline showed better results than clomipramine in treating OCD. It is found that the Influence of Sertraline in depression is quicker than OCD.
